SIBU: The Western Zone women’s sepak takraw team won the women’s quadrants category after defeating their rivals from the Southern Zone here today (Jan 17).

The victory adds another gold medal for the Western Zone at the 3rd Sarawak Games (SUKSAR III).

The Western Zone dominated the gold-medal matches by winning two sets consecutively with scores of 21-9 and 21-11.

The third-place position went to the Northern Zone after overcoming the Central Zone team.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) president, Datuk Ismail Abang Saufi, commended the Takraw athletes.

“Some athletes only underwent training for four to five months, resulting in an improvement in their standards,” he said when met by reporters after presenting medals to the winners.

On the Malaysian Games (SUKMA), he mentioned that Sarawak is capable of surprising through the exposure given to athletes from within and outside Sarawak.

“I believe that SUKMA, scheduled for August this year, with our certified coaches planning for sports events outside Sarawak, either on the Peninsula or abroad, will bring surprises due to the exposure,” he said.
